How (and why) you should market to your torrenting fans

From the DIY Musician Blog: Depending on your level of success as a DIY musician, you may have dozens, hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of fans out there who’ve downloaded your music for free from one torrent site or another. These are people who’ve not paid for the experience of (you hope) enjoying your music.

But they also live in the real world: they buy products, they pay for services, they engage with their community, and they can be moved by marketing. In fact, you’d probably see far better results marketing to that group of torrenters than to some other target groups. The torrenters have already demonstrated an interest in your music, after all, so they’re the perfect people to message with things like special merch offers, concert tickets, or limited-edition vinyl.
