Review: Gina Zavalis, “Gina Zavalis”

“What’s most impressive about her vocal performance throughout the course of the record is Zavalis’ ability to focus not just on power, but supplying the nuance. And it’s that subtlety that makes this EP shine.”

Gina Zavalis

On her self-titled EP, Brooklyn native Gina Zavalis takes on some pretty lofty goals. While there’s an intimacy to the arrangements, there is definitely a sense of grandeur in the performance. It’s this duality that makes this record such an interesting and gratifying listen.

Opening track “In Your Eyes” sets the bar pretty high, and quickly makes it clear that Ms. Zavalis has range. Which is possibly an understatement. The depth and control of her vocal power is only one aspect of what makes her voice such a wondrous discovery; it’s also built upon layers of emotion, precision, and a breadth of dynamics that are reserved for the likes of vocalists like Celine Dion or Kelly Clarkson. Where “In Your Eyes” establishes her as the powerhouse vocalist, then “Reach for Me” shows the control, and intimacy of a more stripped-down performance.

“I Am Here,” another pop-tinged vocal, is also laced with opportunities for Zavalis to hit and hold with precision, control and a rich vibrato that bears all the marks of performance training. It’s a difficult song for mere mortals to pull off, and Zavalis manages to do so while making it sound easy. “Waiting” and “As I Give My Heart” evoke even more depth and color from this singer’s powerful instrument, and find Zavalis settling in even further to a comfort zone that strives for greatness.

Never during this EP does our heroine come off like a diva, though she certainly has the chops to blow several of them out of the water. What’s most impressive about her vocal performance throughout the course of the record is Zavalis’ ability to focus not just on power, but supplying the nuance. And it’s that subtlety that makes this EP shine.
