Juliana Mere Mortal

Australian singer-songwriter Juliana is beautiful, talented and certainly has the whole package needed to make it as a mainstream pop artist in the modern music industry. So it’s incredibly refreshing to find that her new EP Mere Mortal is such a wonderful introduction to her soulful brand of pop because of her flawless vocals and passionate performance style. She has a down-to-earth appeal, and an interesting take on what is essentially a “break-up, I’m-getting-over-you” collection of songs.

Upon first listen, I think it would be easy to write this off as a solid pop record. Which, it is, but there is something else here and it’s hard to put my finger on but it feels like there’s something a little bit darker and deeper at work. The lyrics themselves don’t rest on anything trendy or trite, and that certainly helps give an edge to her pristine vocals. And let’s talk about those vocals for a second, because there’s a purity to them. She can clearly work a huge run into a song, but chooses instead to push out more and ramp that passion up into longer, sustained notes. That clear tone and obvious ability to emote is a powerful tool that propels this record from start to finish.

There really isn’t a single song on Mere Mortal that wouldn’t find immediate airplay on any radio station worth its salt. It’s pop music with an inspirational edge. The “moving on from a break up or other negative situation” vibe is positive, emotionally relevant and a really great representation of girl power in its purest form. “Speechless” is a great kickoff to the EP with a danceable groove. “Perfect Dream” is possibly my favorite vocal performance on the record, full of raw emotion and a perfect showcase for that slightly edgier singer to come out. “Waterfalls” is another radio-ready hit in waiting, and really brings the entire listening experience together with soaring vocals and a great melody.

What I like most about Mere Mortal is the relatable edge and positive message that it evokes. Juliana performs and writes with passion (and can certainly write a hook), and that will always be an asset for expression. She packs more punch in five songs that many artists find in five albums worth of material. It’s an impressive introduction for me to this Aussie pop artist who is sure to make waves and new fans with the release of Mere Mortal.
