Lauren Shera Gold and Rust

Upon wrapping up recording on her third album, singer-songwriter Lauren Shera packed up and moved to Nashville from California. Gold and Rust, her new release, reflects a synergy between her ability to bridge the surf and sand with middle America. It’s sun-soaked country and folk that surprises; and Shera’s performance on this record shows great range and potential.

There’s a grit and strength that underpins all the tracks included on Gold and Rust; and that range moves between sparse and sometimes ethereal folk tunes to country-tinged burners. Shera walks a similar musical line as Jessica Lea Mayfield or Gillian Welch; it’s not a straight line, and it often dips and weaves into multiple musical genres, sometimes within the confines of one song. Buoyed by strong vocals and lyrics, the 10 tracks give a full glimpse into the influences and unique personality of Shera.

The opening track, “Light & Dust,” sets a strong first impression, showcasing Shera’s vocals with a hypnotic beat and perfectly timed instrumentation. It’s a fantastic start that continues to build with the wondrous “Hell’s Bells.” A delicate start slowly builds to a crescendo with lush harmonies and my favorite of Shera’s vocals. This is a particularly strong track only eclipsed by the radio-ready “Howl”. There’s a ruminative edge to this tune, and it’s a great example of Shera’s introspective writing style. “Evening” closes the record with an almost dirge-like tone that highlights the often haunting and ethereal quality of Shera’s songs.

Gold and Rust is an album steeped in storytelling, and Shera bears an accomplished and unique voice. Her combination of folk-tinged, country-influenced music is a perfect balance of West Coast-meets-Middle America. There’s just enough bite to cut through the sweetness and vulnerability that laces Shera’s extremely emotive vocal style. This is a polished, complete album that showcases all of Shera’s strengths as a songwriter and vocalist. Gold and Rust is an exciting and wonderful album to get to know her better with.
