Review: Miner, “Better Instincts”

“As much as Justin Miner’s vocals punctuate and capture the essence of the song, the urgency and sweeping nature of the instrumentation and background vocals could fill up a deep canyon.”

Miner Better Instincts

Los Angeles folk/rock band Miner is comprised of husband and wife Justin and Kate Miner, along with Justin’s brother Jeremy Miner and drummer/percussionist Tobias Urbanczyk. And they make some crazy beautiful music together. While I’d typically wait until the full release of their 2016 album Tuanaki to feature the band, sometimes when you hear something special you just want to get in on that a little bit early and let others in as well.

Produced in Seattle with the amazing Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Band of Horses), the Miners (plus the uber-talented Urbanczyk) have tapped into Justin Miner’s distinct vocal style and built up a gorgeous backdrop surrounding it to take it to new heights. There was clearly a lot of care taken with developing the already strong sense of identity that this band has carved out for themselves in the studio production of this track…and I suspect the entirety of the upcoming album. Fans of The Head and the Heart and Lord Huron will love this band; the expansive sound is barely contained and yet every member is in total command of the parts they play.

Kate Miner’s vocals serve as a wonderful counterbalance to her husband’s; there’s a natural, lilting tone to her voice that manages to cut through in such lovely harmonious fashion. That subtlety plus the perfectly time vocals of brother Jeremy make for a powerful combination as the song continues to build. As much as Justin Miner’s vocals punctuate and capture the essence of the song, the urgency and sweeping nature of the instrumentation and background vocals could fill up a deep canyon.

Having had the choice of watching the video or listening to the track first, I chose to listen (and listen and listen…because I had this song looping for a long, long time). Watching the video, however, takes this song to another level; the visuals match the sound, with limitless views that celebrate the grandeur of what Miner is creating. There isn’t much left to say, except that I urge you to get in on this one early. Miner isn’t going to remain an underdiscovered band for much longer if “Better Instincts” is any indication of what’s to come with their record release next year.
