My Brothers and I

My Brothers and I, a five-piece Portland pop/soul band, unsurprisingly feature three brothers (David, Erik and Scott) plus their childhood friends Jordan and Johnny in what could be considered a classic lineup for this style of music. And it’d be easy to write this off as easy-on-the-ears pop music; but you’d be absolutely wrong not to lift up the layers a little bit and listen just a little bit closer to what makes this band tick. Don’t Dream Alone is a well-crafted and modern version of Motown-by-way-of-Portland that works exceptionally well.

First, let’s talk about the blue-eyed soul that’s absolutely pouring out of vocalist (and the youngest member) of this band. David Wurgler has developed a smooth and expressive vocal style that sounds well beyond his teenage years. It’s an incredible asset for the band, but works so well with the addition of the well-placed harmonies provided by his brother Erik and keyboardist Johnny. And what else works well is the somewhat minimalist instrumentation that accompanies the majority of the tunes on Don’t Dream Alone. It’s a refreshing change from the often overproduced efforts of their contemporaries in this field.

Highlights include lead track “Dreams” and the charming “Maddy Brown.” “Na Na Na” is a song that could slip right into modern pop radio playlists. There’s not a note out of place and what’s absolutely key is that none of the tracks included sound like they belong to someone else; all five members contribute to these tracks in a way that exhibits ownership, where they’re clearly in step with each other and no one’s trying to outdo anyone else from a performance standpoint. “Waiting For” is another pleasing track that elicits a perfect groove, one that will have you swaying and swooning for more.

Don’t Dream Alone is a wonderful example of discovering soulful musicality in the most unexpected places; the smooth delivery and organic production on these tracks is refreshing and extremely listenable. The songs My Brothers and I create come from a natural groove and appreciation of the music of their predecessors. It’s a tip of the hat to old soul and R&B music that shows a lot of potential room to grow in the future.
