On the How To Run A Band blog, Chris “Seth” Jackson answers a reader question: “I’m wondering if you have any input on licensing a band as a business.”
From the blog:
I haven’t done it for a band, yet, but I did attempt it with my blog/business.
And I did it entirely wrong.
I talked to my brother who properly set up an LLC (limited liability corporation) for his real estate and rental investments. Here’s his advice.
This advice is purely informational. I’m not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. Please consult a lawyer before doing any of this.
1) Don’t set up an LLC yourself.
If you do it yourself, which is really easy online, most likely you have already screwed it up. Any money that you personally invest into setting up an LLC immediately invalidates the LLC. You have to keep YOUR money separate from the LLC’s in order for it to be valid and afford you the protections you want. Click on the link to read more…
