News: MySpace Music Adds New Features as Sale Nears Close

As parent company NewsCorp continues to seek out a buyer for the unit, MySpace continues to build up its product, particularly on the music side of things. Last month, it introduced integration with Facebook, allowing artists to port their Myspace profiles into their Facebook pages. Kevin Spacey is suing Los Angeles musician Jason Drake, a producer who records under the name Cassettes Don't Listen, for pressing several thousand copies of an album called "Kevinspacey." Lawyers on Spacey's behalf served Drake with cease-and-desist letters stating that Spacey's name is not just trademarked for acting, but also music. Come. On. A U.S. senator has vowed to fight attempts to pass a controversial copyright protection bill that would allow the U.S. government to shut down websites suspected of hosting infringing materials. Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, said that he would seek to block the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act, or COICA, from passing through the full Senate, unless the legislation is changed. News: Live Nation, Ticketmaster Cleared to Merge

Ticketmaster Entertainment and Live Nation won U.S. antitrust clearance to merge after agreeing to divest certain assets, sending the shares of both companies sharply higher. The U.S. Justice Department said it was requiring Ticketmaster to license its primary ticketing software to a competitor, sell off one ticketing unit, and agree to terms that bar it from retaliating against venue owners who decide to use a competing ticket service. The deal is expected to close in a few days to create a new company called Live Nation Entertainment which would own more than 140 concert venues globally, sell around 140 million tickets a year and promote 22,000 concerts annually.
