While Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder agonised over how to maintain their integrity in a big-money world, Spin magazine added a "Biggest Sellout" category to its annual readers' poll. "Nirvana were frozen in time as the paradigm of a certain value system," says Marks. "If you were Mötley Crüe in values and Nirvana in sound, that was crime No 1."
