I love this CD. This is an authentic, perfect, twangy, drawling, downright poetic country rock CD. The Dullards are an outstanding band.
I almost don’t know what else to say. Ideally, I’d have The Dullards play in my yard and just invite everyone to come hear them. Then I could just stand back and say “see?” and that would pretty much be my review. I’d roll in a few kegs and rope off plenty of room for parking the pickup trucks.
Not only do words nearly fail me, but it’s hard to write a review when my feet are tapping, my head is bobbing, and I keep wanting a beer. Wilco would tip their hats in appreciation and then get the hell out of the way before getting run over. This band is out of the gate and tearing up the southern highway.
Take the yee-haw stage-igniter “Never Know Why.” His woman’s left him, so he’s gonna drive around town. Actually, he’s going to sing about it and strum like hell and raise the roof off this joint. People will dance. Rednecks will roar and wail and whoo-hoo and all those other things guys in baseball hats do when country rock bands rip into a relentless boot-stomper and don’t stop until they damn well feel like it or someone calls the cops, whichever comes first. Damn, I want a beer.
They sing songs about driving at night, drinking coffee, and thinking about everything. They sing songs about loving and losing at love and not knowing what the hell they’re doing with their lives. When they sing:
I’ve been living in the back seat of my car
not knowing what to do ...
Question why too many times and you’ll wind up here
Faced with blank stares all around ...
I believe them. They’ve been there. They couldn’t make it up and sound that real.
The harmonies are gorgeous. The blues are alive. These boys kick serious hindparts. If you’ve got a yard big enough and a town noise ordinance lenient enough, have them play your next party. I don’t know about my town’s noise ordinance, but these guys are worth going to jail for. Buy this CD. Now.
