Right now I truly believe rap is going through a rough spot. It’s hard to stay true to the rap roots when it’s all about bling and bitches and crunk. When is enough enough?
Listening to Fundamentals, I was almost instantly taken back to the better days of rap. Sure, they was still tension, but it was in the days before Biggie and Tupac had gone down. The rap feels more raw and real, instead of what they are talking about only being a dream to most of the fans. Random has brought together some great rhymes with some great beats, as well as some equally talented guests.
My only issue with Fundamentals is the number of skits. In small doses and placed properly, I think skits are a great element of hip-hop. I can’t imagine Korn or Michael Buble putting a skit in their next album, but rappers can do it. Here, Random has taken that theme a little too far with a skit between almost every track. It really takes away from the music. I felt like I would miss things because I was either so focused on the songs or the skits that I couldn’t focus on the other. Sure they are funny, but I think that it would be more appreciated if there weren’t so many.
“Park Jam” is probably one of the best tracks on the disc, with beat boxing to keep pace. Guests Problem Child and Bert bring a different speed of rapping to Random’s sound. Although it’s one of the shorter songs, it definitely makes an impact.
I could go through the 17 tracks (that includes three bonus tracks), but I would simply be repeating myself. Fundamentals is as good as anything else that is coming out right now and definitely more believable.
