    Reviews: Katy Blake ~ Self-Titled
    Posted on Saturday, June 03, 2006 @ 04:17:01 PDT
    Topic: Reviews

    Artist: Katy Blake

    CD: Self-Titled

    Home: Raleigh, North Carolina

    Style: Country

Quote: "If I had a crystal ball, it might reveal Katy Blake singing on a Nashville stage in the very near future."

    By Dan MacIntosh

Kathy Blake might just have what it takes to make an immediate mark in commercial country music. She has a bright singing voice, and the kinds of relatable songs that country radio is playing -- sometimes to death -- these days.

The disc's opener, "Mr. Right," is exactly the sort of song radio listeners crave. Because country radio mainly appeals to females, this song about having the patience to wait for the right mate to come along taps right into the radio demographic heart of the matter. Blake's country style is shiny and clear, and even though "Pretending" features pedal steel guitar, it's not too country, if you will, to scare off urbanites.

The best track of all is one called "You'll Never Know," because it tells the story of a relationship that was on the rocks for a while. Nevertheless, these partners had the perseverance to stick it out together. The best change of pace track, however, is one titled "It's Not About You," where Blake is given the chance to show a more gutsy, blues-y side of her vocal personality. If I had a crystal ball, it might reveal Katy Blake singing on a Nashville stage right in the very near future.
