Reviews: Buddy West ~ Step Out On The Water
    Posted on Saturday, September 09, 2006 @ 06:56:16 PDT

    Artist: Buddy West

CD: Step Out on the Water

    Home: North Carolina

    Style: Country

Quote: "Each and every tune on this disc is spiritually-based, and many carry Biblical lessons with them."

    By Dan MacIntosh

One song title on this CD, “The Sunday School Teacher,” summarizes the overall affect of Buddy West’s Step Out On the Water project. Much like Sunday school, each and every tune is spiritually-based, and many of these songs also carry Biblical lessons with them.

Sometimes, West chronicles his own spiritual walk. On “Simon Of Cyrene,” he sings of longing to be like a famous Biblical character, then with “Lord, I May Not Be A Poet,” he speaks about wanting to serve God despite his personal limitations.

West, a North Carolina singer/songwriter, sets many of his songs to country backings. For instance, both “The Sunday School Teacher” and “Lord, I May Not Be A Poet” feature banjo. West breaks from the country style briefly on “Daniel, Dontcha Go,” which rolls and tumbles to a tropical groove, and on “Justified,” where he sings it with a Jamaican accent.

West put this recording together by himself, and it's a labor of love. In addition to a CD booklet containing all the song lyrics, the acknowledgements section not only lists the names of each musical participant, but it also includes their bios and pictures. This is a nice touch, which tells the listener how much West appreciates his friends’ help.

It’s also heartening to read that half the proceeds from this release will go to support the Disciple Bible Outreach Ministry. With so many new artists begging, borrowing, and stealing to become the next American Idol, it’s so wonderful to discover a singer/songwriter with that rarity of rarities: a servant’s heart.
