Sixties rock is not dead. It’s been resurrected and dirtied up little in the music of Grant Duncan. Songs anchored in Jimi-esque guitar licks and poppy chord progressions dominate this retro landscape. Don’t expect any note-for-note imitations, though. Duncan is his own man. His guitar is clearly the focus here, while the other instruments – a basic rock-band line-up of bass and drums – only appear in a simple supporting role.

Like happy bookends, the disc opens and closes with poppy songs. There’s a British invasion thing happening in “Safe Inside These Walls.” Dig the psychedelic distorted guitars. There’s more of that in “State of Mind,” but it’s more Jefferson Airplane, minus Grace Slick, with some Doors-like organ. “At the Next Stop” relies on a blues-influenced guitar lick. There’s no lightening fast lick in “Cynic,” just an extended jam that pretty much says it. Pass the doobie, dude.

We’re back to the Brit invasion with “You Will Be Contented,” a tune that’s a bit Paul Revere and the Raiders. “Need to Get Away” has a more modern sound, an evil rumbling guitar underscored by power chords. Ah, the angst of youth. There’s a great jangly Hollies-like guitar in “Heavy Clouds,” only it’s been carried to a later era with some power synth. “All I’ve Got to Give” is your basic “I need you baby, I gotta have you baby” kinda song. Have a few beers and sing along.

It could sound a little less low quality LP and more polished studio but I dunno, that might ruin the vibe. This is the kind of CD you get after his band blows your hair back at a local club. Put on your go go boots and find Duncan. Avoid the brown acid.
