This album made my inner goth very happy. (I have kind of a hippie-trippy inner
goth.) Dead Leaf Echo, led by the mysteriously-named LG, takes The Cure and U2
and modernizes them, creating darker versions of a siren song. LG has the perfect
voice for these songs - mournful and almost ghostly, but strong, deep and passionate.
Some dark rock singers have delicate voices that sound like they would blow away
in a stiff breeze. LG’s voice takes root and sways in a seductive, enveloping
way. “Shell of Love,” in particular, sounds like it’s being crooned by a spirit
wandering through another realm, and instead of just listening to it float by,
I wanted to get up and find it.
DLE doesn’t just do the gothic and gloomy thing. They also flat-out rock. “Clean” is wild and jumping one moment and then blissfully smooth the next. It’s electrifying, especially if you’re naturally drawn to this kind of music in the first place.
The only drawback is “Walking Away,” a song I actually like except for the fact that the band goes from being U2-influenced to sounding way too much like U2. You could lift this track and put it on an early U2 album, and no one would double-check the credits in confusion.
But I can let that go, especially when wrapped in the lush musical velvet of “Shell of Love” and “Denial.” 80s new wavers definitely need to give this a listen. Your new heroes have arrived.
