Ferrick, Jules Verdone, Barbara Kessler, Lori McKenna, Deb Pasternak and Mary
Gauthier".
Lately, it seems like the thing to do in the music industry these days is
to jump on a bandwagon and record a benefit album for the sheer exposure of
it all. Occasionally, though, one of these rare beasts actually benefits a worthy
cause and turns out to be a damn fine album in the process. "Respond is
a double CD compilation of Boston women singer-songwriters that benefits Respond,
Incorporated, a local non-profit that provides confidential, free services for
battered women and their children." This is a truly amazing record, garnering
musical contributions from the likes of Catie Curtis, Patty Larkin, Laurie Geltman,
Juliana Hatfield, Mary Lou Lord, and featuring previously unreleased cuts from
Jen Trynin, Melissa Ferrick, Jules Verdone, Barbara Kessler, Lori McKenna, Deb
Pasternak and Mary Gauthier. This album features some of the most gifted contemporary
singer/songwriters (female or male) of the East Coast, truly showcasing a wealth
of experience, talent, and beauty. If only all cities breathed music like Boston.
This is not a hit-or-miss album, every song that is contained in this compilation
is worthy of being included and the manner in which this project came together
is a nice reminder that music can heal some wounds. Some of the standouts on
this record include most of the aforementioned women, as well as Alexis Shepard's
"Purple Ray Gun", Jennifer Kimball's "Veering from the Wave",
and Kerri Powers' "Regards to Amsterdam". Look for more information
