Gomesongs Side A is a delight. From the first guitar lick to the last note, this project is well-polished and brought a smile to my face. The instrumentation is catchy, while the vocals are pleasant.
The CD cover itself makes a statement. Terry Gomes is shown playing a pink Fender Telecaster. Not many men would be solid enough in their masculinity to allow themselves to be photographed with a pink guitar, much less place that photo on the cover of a CD. This photograph is a metaphor for the CD, in which the vocals remain light, even when females are not singing. (The vocalists include Terry Tufts, Al Dagenais, Tammy McCrae, and Jennifer Dahl.)
The most memorable track is “Leyanna," a song about a girl who gets pregnant and plans to use people (family, government, etc.) to support herself and the baby. The song begins humourously, but the humor becomes twisted in the social statement Gomes tries to assert. He states in the liner notes that this song says something “about those who defraud our social system” I didn’t know what to think -- is this a light-hearted song with a social message, or is this a social message that loses its punch by trying to be humorous? Either way, this song did stick with me, which could be Gomes' ultimate purpose.
Gomes did a great job on the production. The mastering job is great; the instruments have separation and presence. Very often, musicians have a tendency to overlook the production of a project which could be the difference between a good CD or a great CD. Thankfully, Gomes did not take the easy road on this project.
