Kent Heckaman’s album Songs From Those Days has a very dreamy, ethereal quality to it and sparkles with classical sensibilities. Kent weaves the album together with the continuity of his piano and keyboard work. Raised to tickle the ivories from the young age at his mother Janet’s insistence, the rewards of all of his hard work are obvious on this latest release.
The haunting voices of youth bring the stories to life on this album. The title track looks backwards with reminiscent eyes. "Songs from those days meander through my head. Can’t erase them, Think I’ll run away instead." It conveys the feeling that wishes to discard the painful and hang on to the positive as we move forward. "Remind me - smiles along the way. Remind me - when I made your day,"
Heckaman’s cover of the Elton John /Bernie Taupin song "I’ve Seen That Movie Too" is one of my favorite tracks, and I just love the smoky, sultry feel of Kent’s acoustic piano along with the edge of Kate Myers in a stellar vocal performance. I can certainly see Kent’s vision with this version of a more obscure but nonetheless amazing song by the dynamic duo. Bravo!
Again, Kent Heckaman’s classic training is obvious with "Through the Eyes of My Son," where he utilizes the more symphonic sounds of the cello and the viola as well as the harmonic voices of a talented group of the Northwood Middle School Choir.
A self-described soulful journey, Songs From Those Days is a successful testament to the mantra "practice, practice, practice," as I think Kent Heckaman did a fine job in the production of this second release.
