Tai Vare has an unusual musical background. After a stint with British band The Pasadenas, Vare began a successful career in advertising, by creating jingles for commercials. I was eager to listen to his album, because is takes skill to make a memorable tune for an advert – do you think people would be swayed to buy a product if the commercial wasn't memorable or compelling?

Bringing that talent for catchy music to his album Without a Net, Vare creates a unique record with a classic rock feel. His vocals are somewhere between Steve Miller and Paul Simon, crooning over power pop anthems that have a distinct 80s influence. "Breathe" starts the album off with somewhat Santana-inspired guitar riffs and a mellow beat. Through the CD, Vare incorporates elements from a variety of genres, resulting in a blend of funky prog-rock with a powerhouse approach. "They Know" and "This Time" are very retro, old-school rock. "Wake Up," one of my favorite cuts from the record, blends a string intro nicely with a rowdy guitar track. Another standout is "The Truth About Us," a solid rock effort. "Get What You Think" is the last song on the disc, an eerie track that reminds me a lot of Genesis. Vare takes a different approach with the vocals on this track, setting it apart from the rest of Without a Net.

This is a good collection of classic songs, although Vare does walk a thin line between sounding cool and retro and sounding dated. I think he is a skilled writer with a timeless approach to music, and it would be neat to see what would happen if he perhaps took a different approach to recording, to give his music a newer edge. However, I think anyone with a taste for classic rock should definitely give this disc a spin.
