You may say: who cares if a few companies go to the wall? Good music will still get made. But the knock-on effects of the industry’s inability to invest are already apparent. Bands have disappeared from the charts, replaced by middle-of-the-road crooners (Susan Boyle, Michael Buble) and fast-turnover, X Factor-approved robo-pop. No guitars at all in the Top 30 singles chart – does that not strike you as eerie?
