Basic Electric Guitar Circuits - Potentiometers and Tone Capacitors Saturday, October 08, 2011 @ 19:31:39 CDT Topic: Guitar
| What is a Potentiometer? Potentiometers, or "pots" for short, are used for volume and tone control in electric guitars. They allow us to alter the electrical resistance in a circuit at the turn of a knob. It’s useful to know the fundamental relationship between voltage, current and resistance known as Ohm’s Law when understanding how electric guitar circuits work. The guitar pickups provide the voltage and current source, while the potentiometers provide the resistance. From Ohm’s Law we can see how increasing resistance decreases the flow of current through a circuit, while decreasing the resistance increases the current flow. If two circuit paths are provided from a common voltage source, more current will flow through the path of least resistance.

Why 2011 is the Year Digital Music Broke Friday, October 07, 2011 @ 18:26:12 CDT Topic: Industry News
| 2011 could end being the year digital music broke. Yes, the iTunes Music Store launched back in 2003. But 2011 has been a truly incredible year for digital music. Perhaps most important is the big improvement in download sales. There's a common - and incorrect - belief in the music business that nobody pays for music anymore. That claim just doesn't hold water in 2011. Through September 25, the increase in track and digital album sales has a value of about $236 million (calculated simply using $1.29 for tracks and $9.99 for digital albums). American consumers have purchased an additional 12 million digital albums and 90.5 million tracks on top of what they had purchased at the same point in 2010. Complete Article

Nash has spent a decade at WMG, the last four heading up its digital division, but is stepping down soon. In a wide-ranging interview, Nash says that services such as Spotify, Rdio and MOG have brought the industry to a place where it "has finally figured out free. The recent announcement for all these free offers is from a licensing standpoint the right approach... Free didn't work before. It was once used [by such defunct sites as Imeem and Spiralfrog] to drive engagement with ads. What we're looking for now is for free to drive engagement with subscription services." Complete Article
