Quote: "If we had more African-American country artists like Towns, we would certainly be richer for it."
By Kenny Hart
There's little music closer to pure country than Rhonda Towns gives us on I Wanna Be Loved By You, her debut release. This album would certainly make Charley Pride proud. I have always loved Charley Pride. Now I love Rhonda Towns, too. If we had more African-American country artists like Towns, we would certainly be richer for it.
Rhonda is a preacher's daughter and has the music of a church choir burned into her soul. You won't miss the Southern Gospel influence in her singing, but at first listen, you'd not suspect it. Think Natalie Maines singing with SheDaisy and you'll be close.
This album has hints of vintage Patsy Cline, but Towns seems a little forced in some places as if she's trying to sound like what everyone thinks a girl country singer should sound like. There's no denying her talent, however; she shines on both the title track, a sweet ballad with solid harmonies, and on "The Lord's Prayer." You see the real power of her voice on that track. The title track is as good as anything you'll hear on the radio.
"Those Were The Nights" is my pick, not only for it's catchy play on words, but for its simple, folky guitar-plus-vocal production. Towns's real voice comes out in this track, smooth & expressive with just a touch of smoky sweetness. This is country at its best, from the heart not the production budget.
"I believe with all my heart that country music fans are ready for a new female country music artist that has a genuine history and love of country music ... And I believe that my voice will be a voice that will be heard with a signature sound folks will be able to identify ... "
The voice of Rhonda Towns is definitely worth a listen. And the more you listen, the more you like what you hear. We'll be hearing more from this lady, that I can say with confidence.
