So what is there left to say that hasn’t been said about Jamie Anderson? A true Independent Artist. Touring for over 20 years. Sets up her own gigs. Does her own public relations. Teaches. Belly dances. Keeps up a great sense of humor about it all. AND writes her songs and believes in her music. Ah, the music. I guess that is what still needs to be said: the music is superb. Jamie is a gifted songwriter and this latest CD, Three Bridges, is a testament to her abilities.

Three Bridges is a compilation of songs (her “most requested”) from her eight previous CDs, plus two new songs that really show off what she can do as a songwriter. There is a wide range of styles, but not so wide as to make you think Jamie is just throwing stuff out there to test the waters.

My favorite songs were the ones that made me close my eyes and visualize the story.

“Mama Come Quick” – a story about a boy who in his confusion of real vs. toy, points his father’s gun at his sister and clicks the trigger. The sister, even though she is uninjured, still feels traumatized by the experience. I found this a keen metaphor for how families can unwittingly injure each other.

“Grace” – about a kid going to Bible camp for the first time and having a first sexual experience - hallelujah. Bible camp is all about getting in touch with who you really are.

“Too Busy Being Blue” – you can really hear the bitterness in Jamie’s voice as she tells her ex what she really thinks about the usual break-up rejoinders.

I’m a sucker for sentimental songs about family, and Jamie’s song “My Dad Loves To Sing” is a wonderful account of how her father would play guitar and sing when she was a kid and how she and her siblings sang for him at the hospital after a stroke. I’m sure my kids will think the same of me.

If you’re looking for a CD of entertaining, well-written songs that make you laugh, cry and wonder, then this is the one to buy. If you’re just starting out as a songwriter, this is a good one to get to learn how it’s done.
