Jazz/Pop fans can get a taste of New York via Russia with this EP from Nancy Newlis. Born and raised in Moscow, Newlis was granted a full scholarship at the University Of Miami, Fla. (where the great Bruce Hornsby once attended) and began her jazz leanings there in the school's music program.

Clearly, landing in New York has had an influence on her music, as there is a definite Big Apple vibe here. The self-titled opener has an acoustic shuffle with subtle string arrangements and her unique voice (you might even think at times the voice is male) accents the song quite well. The style is reminiscent of Marianne Faithfull, though the voice is not.

"Social Standing" is solid Jazz/Pop/Cocktail Lounge while "What Is It?" starts downbeat with some mild programming, then builds with some surprisingly jagged guitar squeals, before settling down again until the programming is replaced by live drums on the next verse for a nice use of contrasting sounds.

The closer "Good Morning, Heartache" is a mid-tempo Rock-oriented song and closes things on a good note. One of the strong points with this EP is that it avoids that dinner-club style on most songs that could easily have been a trap.

A good, understated mix is sympathetic to the songs, and fans of Marianne Faithfull, Norah Jones, and Natalie Merchant would be well satisfied here.
