The great hope for digital music was that it would make the recording industry more egalitarian - that up-and-coming bands with pluck and a knack for promotion would be able to get their work to the masses without the backing of record labels. At a time when more music is available than ever before, why do so many consumers buy the same few songs? It may be because popular taste tends to reinforce itself, especially in an online world. Or it may be because buyers of single tracks tend to be casual fans who are more inclined to buy songs they hear on the radio and TV. Complete Article
